How is AI changing hardware product development?

AI is changing hardware product development most in the work before engineering starts: researching markets, validating demand, synthesizing customer evidence, writing requirements and preparing gate decisions. These guides explain where AI helps enterprise hardware teams, where people still decide, and how AI fits into the stage-gate process you already run.

Frequently asked questions

Does AI replace the stage-gate process?

No. AI speeds up the work inside each gate, such as research, synthesis and drafting. The gates, criteria and decision-makers stay the same.

How is an AI product operating system different from PLM?

PLM manages the product once it is being engineered: CAD, bills of materials and change control. An AI product operating system works earlier, on customer insight, validation, requirements and the investment decision, and hands off to engineering tools.

How do enterprise hardware teams protect IP when using AI?

By keeping unreleased product data in tools that isolate it from other customers, do not use it to train AI models and hold current security certifications, rather than in consumer AI tools.

Where should a hardware team start with AI?

With evidence it already has. Synthesizing existing customer interviews or past project documents shows value quickly and does not require changing the gate process.
